Healthy Organic Eggs
Before you eat anything, ask yourself – Do I know where this food came from? How was it made/ produced? Is it good or bad for me? One as simple as eggs can come from multiple sources and can sadly have bad health effects. Your best and healthiest option for eggs is organic eggs.
Eggs are produced through organic means, which means poultry are organic fed, no antibiotics are used and birds are living in a cage-free environment.
Organic feeds, first and foremost, improve the taste, and also have several nutrition and health benefits. No byproducts. No GMO (genetically modified organisms) crops. No synthetic fertilizer. These feeds are grown only by the organic farmers that are certified. There’s a specific health criterion to become certified so one can be sure of getting good quality eggs.
Antibiotics are only allowed on emergency cases, like an outbreak of an infection or a disease.
Chickens can roam freely and can pick up food from a natural environment which includes plants. This lowers the chicken’s stress level and also again improves the overall taste of the eggs. Because the hens are free to roam around, they sometimes end up laying eggs somewhere other than the owner expected!
To somehow prevent this, nesting boxes are placed above a belted system so that the birds can lay their eggs on the system, not on the ground. Molting is also not practiced on this organic farm since it’s considered harsh treatment of the poultry for some communities. The birds are allowed to go into a natural molt but aren’t induced to make profit.
So what do I get from consuming organic eggs? A lot of health benefits, that’s for sure! Here are some of the known benefits:
-Healthy protein and fat
-Vitamins D, B12, B2, niacin, and folate
-Three time mores omega-3 fat
-Nearly twice as much Vit. E
-Nearly twice as much vitamin A in yolks
-Lutein and zeaxanthin, which are yellow and orange carotenoids that can reduce your risk of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration
-Choline, a healthy nutrient that’s essential to normal cell structure and function and proper signaling between regular cells and nerve cells
Now, even though eggs are labeled “organic”, doesn’t mean it never goes bad. How do I spot a healthy egg?
Here are four measures:
It should have an intact shell with no cracks.
It shouldn’t smell bad.
The white portion should be gel-like and not watery.
The yellow portion should be round and firm.
An additional tip for a healthy diet and lifestyle: When frying eggs, use virgin coconut or olive oil. Organic butter is also now available widely. These have high healthy saturated fatty acids, which are good for you.
Go healthy and love the environment. Go organic starting today!
