Yummy Eggnog For The Holidays
Yummy Eggnog For The Holidays
Holidays call for celebration! And what better way to celebrate than with a glass (or two) of eggnog. Eggnog is a sweetened dairy-based beverage that is popular throughout the United States and Canada. This delightful holiday treat is everyone’s favorite, especially if it’s made with a kick of rum and bourbon.
The recipe below is good for 24 servings, which can be consumed by ten people in about two hours. Make more batches more guests are expected to come. It’s surprising how fast it can go with so few people.
Ingredients:
12 eggs
4.5 cups (1 liter) of Fifth bourbon
350ml of white rum
4.5 cups of milk (whole or 2%PRCTG%)
750ml of heavy whipping cream
1.5 cups of sugar
Ground nutmeg, to add flavor
1. Separate the egg whites from the yolks. It’s a good idea to separate the whites from one egg into a small bowl. Pour the whites from that egg onto the larger bowl. Make sure there is zero yolk in the egg whites before beating them or the whites won’t be fluffy.
2. Beat the egg whites until stiff and the tips are forming firmly.
3. Mix half the sugar with the egg whites.
4. Mix the remaining half of the sugar onto the egg yolks.
5. Gently mix the yolks into the beaten egg whites while pouring slowly (the goal is to keep the fluffiness of the whites).
6. Slowly pour the rum into the egg mixture and gently stir in.
7. Slowly pour the milk into your mixture and gently stir in.
8. Slowly pour the bourbon into the mixture and gently stir in.
9. Separate half the cream into a mixing bowl and set it aside.
10. Pour the other half of the cream into the egg mixture and gently stir in.
11. Whip the half of the cream in the separate bowl until nearly stiff.
12. Gently fold the whipped cream into your mixture.
13. Grate the nutmeg (or just use pre-grated).
14. Ladle the eggnog into a punch glass and sprinkle a bit of nutmeg on top of the frothy, tasty eggnog. Be sure to ask your guest first if they are allergic to nutmeg before adding to their cup.
Eggnog is traditionally served in small crystal glasses or punch cups.
If eggnog is to be served to kids/ under-aged guests, simply skip the rum and the bourbon for a non-alcoholic version. You can also try substituting equal amounts of milk for the rum and whiskey. Then folks who want the alcohol can add liquor to their cup as they like.
Be gentle throughout the entire mixing process. Don’t over-beat the eggs or the cream; the whipped cream will begin to taste like butter when whipped too long.
Happy holidays, everyone!
